Power Up Your Indoor Comfort This Spring April 15, 2018 A Qualified HVAC Electrician Should Help Install Your New A/C 'You know, your HVAC system is not really supposed to last this long.' That's what a qualified HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) electrician had to tell one senior couple recently, when they had trouble with their indoor comfort system. And it was news to them. The seasons were beginning to change, and it was that interesting time of the year between winter and summer when the couple was accustomed to switching from heating to cooling – and back again – at least once a day. But when they tried to use their air conditioner after it's long winter's 'nap,' well, they couldn't get the darned thing to work. Turns out the system, unbeknownst to the couple, was not only on its last legs... it was on borrowed time. When the electrician finally got a chance to inspect the system, he learned the entire HVAC package had been replaced, and was brand new... ... in 1995. The couple was able to dig out the 'paperwork,' and they were surprised to find their 'new' HVAC system had continued working long after its TEN year warranty had expired! Beyond The Mechanical Aspects Of HVAC At first, the couple had assumed their HVAC woes were of a mechanical nature. But they didn't know what could've caused the problem. Had they kept the temperature in their home 'moderate,' not going for too much warmth in the winter or air conditioning in the summer? In other words, had they done their level best to keep from over-taxing the system's capacity? They had. Check. Had they faithfully replaced the filters, as they'd been told to do, on a regular schedule? Yes. Check again. Baffled, and unable to determine the cause of the problem (let alone solve it), the couple finally called the company that had installed the system. The company sent a nice young man out to take a look. He asked about the system use, and the filter replacement... and then he pulled the cover off the control panel and took a look inside. He then suggested someone else for the couple to call. Your Indoor Comfort System Is Electrical, Too The nice young man was a new, but fully-qualified HVAC tech – not an HVAC electrician. When he looked at the wiring and other electrical components in the system, he suggested the couple call in a specialist. The reputable electric firm the couple called sent out a certified HVAC electrician, who had been specially trained (and was specifically experienced and skilled) in the complex electrical aspects of HVAC systems. He discovered that, while up-to-code for 1995, the electrical components in the couple's HVAC system were now badly in need of updating... and, in some cases, they were worn out and would've needed replacement in any case. It didn't take long for the HVAC electrician to figure out the issues and make the necessary repairs. And, at his suggestion, the couple started planning their budget around replacing the entire system within the next year or two. When you get your home's power system checked, don't forget the HVAC. Especially this time of year, when the outside temperature keeps fluctuating (sometimes wildly), it's nice to know your system will be ready when you need it. Wouldn't that be cool?
